Ideas Island #3 (Svanholmen, Stockholm, Sweden)

sarfaraz

General info about Ideas Island.

Ideas Island was created as a safe haven for creatives. A place made to inspire and motivate people with great ideas to make those ideas happen. Created to give creative people the time and space needed to sit down and focus on their ideas – while at the same time feeling great. And to let them stay on the island without having to pay us anything.

So in short: You get your own private island that you can stay on for up to two weeks and you do not pay us anything. (You only have to pledge to give US$ 1.000 to a charity of our choice.)

If you get to go you have the whole island for yourself, so you can be alone with your ideas.

Why is Fredrik Härén doing this?

Because:

1) Fredrik knows that the best ideas come when you are alone in a relaxing place, which makes private islands perfect for idea generation.

2) Fredrik feels that it is wrong to charge people to stay on the islands. He does not want to make money on your creative process.

Ideas Island is his way of giving back to the world. A way of encouraging creativity. And he is happy to take the cost of running and developing the three Ideas Islands.

If you feel the urge to get away to a private island to sit and develop some great ideas, then read the rest of the information here and feel free to apply to be one of the lucky ones that get to go.

About Ideas Island #3 (Svanholmen, Stockholm, Sweden)

Ideas Island #3 is a tiny private island of just 2 000 sqm, located very close to Stockholm, Sweden. It is perfect for a creative person who wants an island that is both secluded and yet full of energy. All the boats and ships going into Stockholm pass by the island, close enough to inspire you, but far away to keep your privacy.

The island is home to many different kind of birds, and fittingly enough – since the name of the island is “Svanholmen” – even a pair of Swans live there.

Ideas Island #3 is where Fredrik Härén spends most of his time. When he is not there you get a chance to experience this unique place.

The house.

There are a number of small houses on the island and if you add up the floor space on all of them you get more than 100 sqm. The main house is designed by Alexander Lervik and built to resemble a birds nest.

The main house is modern, while the other houses on the island are classic, Swedish summer houses painted in red. (The oldest house is from 1917.)

Since the island is tiny there is not running fresh water (only sea water), and only a dry toilet, and all the electricity comes from solar cells. (Drinking water is easily collected in a tap on land after a 3 minute rowing trip in the rowing boat.)

The view from the 40 sqm veranda on top of the main house is magical.

About Ideas Island #2 (Vifärnaholme, Stockholm, Sweden)

Ideas Island #2 is a 7 000 sqm big, private island close to Stockholm, Sweden, that you get exclusive access to. Yes, you get the whole island to yourself so that you can focus on finalizing what ever idea you want to make happen.

It has been created to make it as inspiring, relaxing and enjoying as possible to sit and work on ideas.

 The house.

The house is not big (65 sqm), but since the house is located in the middle of the Island it is alway only a few meters to the water on all sides. The closeness to the water will inspire you.

The house will sleep about 6 people in 5 beds in 4 bedrooms (+ one small guest cabin.)

The house is not fancy, but a typical Swedish summer house. It has running water, electricity, washer, heating and water closet etc.

The house might be basic, but the island is magical. It has its own beach, its own dock, plenty of room room to run around, and yet small enough to always be close to water.

Even though it is one of the 10 most central private islands in Stockholm the island feels very isolated and secluded once you are on it. In most directions you see nothing but water and trees, yet you always know you are close to civilisation.

You get to the island by rowing about 200 meters.

News for March.

sarfaraz

After launching “One World. One Company.” last month it was very fitting that March was again a very global month for Fredrik.

In 17 days in March he spoke in:

Cambodia, Singapore, Norway, Sweden, Abu Dhabi and Indonesia.

Traveling to different places means nothing unless you also learn. So in March Fredrik learnt (amongst other things) about:

How the tape industry is being changed by the mobile phone business while speaking for Tesa.

How mobile payments in Africa is driving the digital money industry while speaking for Visa.

How the renewable energy sector is changing while speaking for Siemens.

What the future of search looks like while speaking for Finn.no.

How much food is wasted by commercial airlines while speaking for Jeppesen.

and

How the drive for more nutritious food in developing countries is driving growth, while speaking for Danone.

As a bonus he also got to:

See how the ancient builders of Angkor Wat in Cambodia built their temples.

Learn how the drivers of jeeps tackle the sand dunes by attending a dessert safari.

And much, much more.

Not bad for a month where Fredrik took 12 days off to be on paternity leave with his newborn, baby girl.

Quote of the Month:

“Fredrik’s presentation was very well received by our audience. Although I had experienced it before and knew what was coming, it was again very stimulating and motivating for me personally.”

– Andrea Stumpf, Jeppesen. (Who booked Fredrik for two of their mayor customer conferences in the last 6 month.)

Awarded “Certified Speaking Professional (CSP)”

sarfaraz

The Global Speakers Federation has 6,000 speakers as members. Less than 700 are CSP’s. In Asia there are only 10. One of them is now me.

After being a full time professional speaker (and author) for 12+ years who has spoken in 45+ countries I am very proud to be part of this professional and exclusive group of speakers.

News February.

sarfaraz

In February the focus was on the launch of Fredrik’s new book: “One World. One Company.”

The book is off to a great start.

More than 10 000 copies (!) had been ordered before the launch of the book!

(The average business book sells less than 3500 copies.)

More than 250 people gathered at the launch of the book at Raffles Hotel on Feb 27.

Also in February:

1) Fredrik Härén was awarded: CSP – Certified Speaking Professional as one of only 10 in Asia, and one of less than 700 in the whole world.

2) Of course Fredrik also did some speaking engagements around the world. One extra fun booking was to be the keynote speaker at a marketing conference in Jakarta (Where he got the highest mark of all the speakers in the evaluations). Another interesting booking was to speak on the future of school in the Swedish Parliament for the political party “Centern”.

Quote of the month:

“Thank you so much for your speech. Your thoughts are 100 years ahead of ours here in Indonesia.”

– One of the participants of Indonesia Brand Summit.

News January.

sarfaraz

The month of January was full of different experiences.

It started off with me on a floating raft in Palawan. I had breakfast on a river side hotel in Bangkok. Got to see the amazing fjords of Norway and got to go powder snow snowboarding in Sapporo, Japan. (Probably the best skiing of my life.) I then got to go back to Thailand again, before spending some time in Singapore and ending the month by going to KL, Malaysia twice in one week.

My clients were as diverse as the landscapes I got to see in January.

I spoke for senior managers of Volvo Trucks Asia, and politicians in Trondheim, for TV sales executives at FOX Asia, for Country heads for health company Mega and for Key Account Managers for Ericsson South East Asia, management students at SMU and I was the keynote speaker at the global conference for HID.

Even the subjects I was asked to speak on were diverse.

I spoke on: Creativity in The Developing World, Business Creativity, One World. One Company (about being a global company) and I even did a speech about how I look at the future of the world, and another one on how to live a creative life.

Yes, January was really full of different experiences.

(Picture of my legs covered by 50 cm of powder snow a few hours before I did my speech in Japan.)

“One World. One Company.”: How some of the best companies are becoming Global – and why you should too.

sarfaraz

It is time to update the way we view the world of business.

In this book, Fredrik Härén argues for why—and how—companies need to become global in the way they conduct business.

Learn how some of the most successful companies, big and small, have been able to make this transition; what other companies can learn from them; the challenges you will face when going global; and the dangers that loom for those who choose not to.

Be inspired by what Fredrik learnt by interviewing the CEO of SKF in a hotel in Beijing, the CMO of Jones Lang LaSalle in an office in London and a marketing executive of Google at the Googleplex in San Francisco, among many other things. For his research, Fredrik Härén traveled to more than 20 countries, conducting interviews with professionals working for successful organizations such as Mindshare, Volvo, IKEA, Rovio, Siemens, Jotun, Manpower, Ericsson, Maersk and many, many more.

Prepare to be surprised, challenged and inspired—and to look at the world of business in a brand new way.

About The Idea Book

sarfaraz

A book on creativity should not be like other books.

The Idea book is 150 pages about ideas, 150 empty pages for your own idea. It’s an Idea Book.

The “book part” consists of 63 different chapters on how you can develop new ideas. Every chapter ends with a practical activity, or exercise, where the reader can practise the lesson of that chapter. The book is full of stories, anecdotes and quotes about how to generate ideas.

The “notebook part” is a place for your to work on, and store, your best ideas. Follow in the tradition of the long line of creatives that have used a small, black notebook to catch their ideas.

The combination of creativity boosts from the chapters, and a beautiful notebook for your ideas makes The Idea Book the perfect companion to anyone who wants to nurture their creativity.

As a self-published that has managed to sell close to 250 000 copies around to people in over 60 countries, the success of The Idea Book comes from the support and encouragement of its users. The people who get The Idea Book tend to love it and give it away to friends, colleagues or clients.

Want to know more? Read what some of our readers are saying about their idea books, download a sample to get a feel of the book, or just order one for yourself or a whole bunch to give away to your most creative friends, or to someone you know who could benefit from becoming a little bit more creative.

Give US$1,000 to charity and get to stay on a private island all by yourself – for free – so you can work on your ideas.

sarfaraz

Did you ever wish you could just get away and sit alone on a private island and just focus on your best ideas? Well, now you can.

Ideas Island has been created as a safe haven for creatives. A place made to inspire and motivate people with great ideas to make those ideas happen.

If you are willing to give $1,000 to charity we will let you stay for free. Private islands can cost thousands of dollar per day to rent. But we believe people should be encouraged to be creative, so we decided not to charge anything for your stay.

We want to help great an enviroment that helps to bring some great ideas to life. And we all know that truly great ideas come when we are in solitude, when we are relaxed, when we are close to nature and when we feel in tune with the universe.

So, what better place to think about ideas than alone on a private island!

About the islands

We have three Ideas Islands.
Ideas Island 1:

A 30,000 sqm big, private island in Palawan, (sleeps 4)

Ideas Island 2:

A 7,000 sqm private island just outside Stockholm, Sweden. (Sleeps 5-6)

Ideas Island 3:

A 2,000 sqm private island also just outside Stockholm, Sweden. (Sleeps 5)

At the moment, only Ideas Island 2 and 3 are open.

Our ideas island in the Philippines was hit badly by the Yolanda Thypoon.
All we had built – the house, the tree house, the boats etc- is now gone.
The only thing that survived was the toilet…So for the time being Ideas Island Philippines is closed.

How it works.

Tell us what idea you want to work on and why we should let you go.

If you get selected you get the whole island to yourself. There are no other guests.

Normally you get to stay for a week.

We do not charge you anything for it.

So what are you waiting for? Read more about the three islands by clicking on them to the right. Then put together a complete and inspiring application and who knows – perhaps you will soon sit and work on some great ideas on one of the Ideas Islands!

If you want a glimpse of what it will be like, check out this video done by one of our previous guests who stayed at Ideas Island #1 in the Philippines:

FAQ

Q: Do I really get to stay on the island without paying?

A: Yes! Great isn’t it?  (We do ask that you pledge $1,000 to charity, more about that below.)

Q: This is too good to be true! What is the catch? (Or: Is this fake?)

A; It is NOT fake. And there is no catch! If you pledge $1,000 to charity you and your friends can stay a week on a private island. We have created ideas island in honour of all creative people who have created things that people used to think was too good to be true!

Q: How long can I stay?

A: Normally one week. If you can argue well for why one week is not enough then we might let you stay longer.

Q: How many people can stay on the island?

A: Between 4 and 6 depending on the island. So it is ok to bring friends. (The $1,000 to charity is per group, not per person.) There will never be other guests on the island, so the only people you will be charing the island with is the friends you bring along.

Q: We want to go on honey moon/vacation/celebrate a birthday etc on your island, will you let us go?

A: No. Ideas Island exists purely to let creative people get away to work on their ideas.

Q: Do I have to cover the cost of going there myself?

A: Yes. You pay for your travel. You pay for the food. You stay for free.

Q: Why are you asking for US$ 1,000 to charity.

A: It is a way for us to filter out the good applicants. There are many people who would love to stay for free on a private island. By seeing who is willing to give $ 1,000 to charity we feel we more easily can identify the nice guys. 😉

Please note that 100% of that money goes to the charity! We do not take anything.

Q: Which charity will I be supporting?

A: At the moment we are supporting re-planing efforts in Palawan and an orphanage in Coron, both Philippines. In the future we will also offer a chance to support a Swedish charity.

Q: How can you offer it for fee? (Or: Why don’t you charge?)

A: Fredrik Härén covers the cost of maintaining, marketing and administrating the three ideas islands. It is, of course, a sizeable amount, but he thinks it is worth it if it can inspire people to work on their best ideas. (And the reason we do not charge is that it would take away all the magic. It would be boring. And, frankly, uncreative.)

Q: How do I get there?

A: If have sent in a proper application, and if you are selected to get to go, you will get a PDF with all the information you need about the island you will be going to.

Q: Which weeks are available?

A: We are working on a on-line booking function, until that is done, please just email us which week(s) you would like to go. First come first serve.

Q: When can I go?

A: The Swedish Islands are open from 1st june to 30th september. The one in the Philippines is open year round, except july and august which is rainy season.

Q: What is the chance of me getting to go?

A: At the moment we are very selective with letting people go. We are still learning how to do this and we rather have a few happy guests than to always be fully booked. (Remember, we are not doing this to make money, we actually loose money doing it.)

Q: Will you inform me for your reason for not selecting me?

A: At the moment we do NOT have the resources to reply personally to every email application that we get. We will ONLY reply to you if you HAVE been selected. But we hope to soon have enough manpower to be able to reply to everyone. In the meantime we ask for your understanding.

Q: What is the weather like?

A: Sorry, we do not have time to answer simple questions like this.

(Ideas Island is not a resort. It is not a hotel. We lend out private islands and do not charge for it, so please forgive us for not being able to answer all kind of questions around the islands. If you are serious about wanting to go, please apply and if you get selected you will receive a PDF with all the information you need.

Q: How do you select who gets to go?

A: We look at the kind idea you want to develop. If you and your idea inspire us, we would love to help you bring your ideas to life.

Final words

We think great ideas are inspiring. And we therefore think great ideas should be inspired!

So, that’s it. Stop dreaming, and just send in your application.

We leave you with some examples of the views you will be looking at if you do get to go.
