Ignorance Busters: Gangnam Style. (Post from newsletter.)
A few days ago the video for the song Gangnam Style became the most viewed video on Youtube and it will soon be the first video to pass a billion views. It is also the video with the most likes (around 6 million)
Perhaps more impressive are that hundreds of millions of views of parody videos with everything from Mitt Romney Style to grandmothers doing the funny hors-riding-dance. You might love the song, or hate it. You might love the dance, or hate it. But either way, I am pretty sure you know about it.
If you ask me, the one thing that PSY has done is to create a crack in the wall of ignorance that the west has raised against the east. Twenty to thirty years from now I think we will look back at Gangnam Style as the first example of how global trends and global culture now get created in Asia and then spread to the rest of the world. No, Gangnam Style is not the first meme to spread out of Asia, and yes, Asia has exported many things to the rest of the world BUT the run-away-sucess of this happy, little song and the way the west has embraced it is – for me – an example of something new.
Of Asia defining what is trendy, beautiful, cool or funny. My book “The Developing World” is JUST about this shift. So of course I want to take the opportunity to use this newsletter to celebrate the 1 billion view mark of Gangnam Style. Go Asia! Go The Developing World.

Hong Kong, China
The cities I spoke in during October 2012 are as different as the clients that I had.
Nike Foundation, Keppel Group, Stoli, Pacific Basin, IKEA and Wikborg, Rein & Co.
In one month I got to learn about how Nike is supporting girls in Africa, how a off shore company is reshaping its training, what the future of premium vodka looks like, how the shipping industry is handling its crises, how a furniture company is trying to work differently with its suppliers and how a foreign law firm looks at the future of China.
The great thing with being a speaker is not only that you get to inspire people to be more creative, you also BECOME more creative and inspired by learning from so many different industries.
(Picture from a former school in Portland that had been rebuilt to a conference hotel and where NIKE had put their conference that I was speaking at.)
